LUBBOCK, Texas, July 18, 2018 – Today, Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health Corp. and UMC Health System broke ground on a new, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital located beside the UMC Business and Technology Center on North Slide. The address for the rehabilitation hospital is 5406 Colgate Street. The specialized hospital will offer a new service line for people in Lubbock and surrounding communities through its comprehensive rehabilitation services.
Along with the ceremonial groundbreaking, an invocation was delivered by Rev. Larry Cothrin, Director of Pastoral Care at UMC, and remarks were provided by Chris Wortham, CEO of the future inpatient rehabilitation hospital; John Lowe, Director of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at UMC; and Mark Tarr, president and CEO of Encompass Health Corp.
“Services provided at this hospital will help people return to their highest levels of independence after experiencing a life-altering illness or injury,” said Wortham. “Together, Encompass Health and UMC will bring high-quality, cost-effective rehabilitative services to the Lubbock community. I look forward to being part of the team that will make new beginnings possible for our patients.”
The freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital will include private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym, an in-house pharmacy, a dialysis suite for patients needing dialysis services during their stay, courtyard, dining room and dayroom areas. Services through the new hospital are expected to begin spring 2019.

We believe this rehabilitation hospital will elevate rehabilitation options, giving patients in Lubbock and the region access to a wider range of care.”
The hospital team will provide inpatient rehabilitation services and higher medical management for patients recovering from stroke and other neurological disorders, hip fractures, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and complex orthopedic conditions. Patients will receive a minimum of three hours per day of therapy for five days each week, 24-hour nursing care, access to advanced technologies and frequent visits by an attending physician during their stay.
Gresham, Smith & Partners is the architect for the hospital and the contractor is Hoar Construction. The cost of the project is approximately $20 million.
