Health care giant Encompass Health growing to meet needs

What began with one facility in the 1980s is now one of the largest health systems in the country, and it’s based right here. “We’re very proud to be one of the corporate headquarters that are based here in Birmingham,” said Encompass Health CEO Mark Tarr. “We have a strong history with the city and the surrounding communities.”

Tarr, who said the company is staying headquartered in Birmingham indefinitely, also said the rapidly growing health system is aiming to build as many as 10 new hospitals per year as well as add 100 to 150 beds to existing hospitals. In 2021, the system added eight hospitals, and in 2022, it added nine.

Encompass Health treated more 200,000 patients this year and a significant number of Medicare patients. The majority of the patients treated are neurological patients, including stroke or brain dysfunction patients. More than 90% of Encompass Health’s patients come directly from acute care hospitals with the rest coming from physician offices and skilled nursing facilities.

Encompass Health reported $3.21 billion in net operating revenue for the nine months that ended Sept. 30, an increase from $2.97 billion during that same period last year. In total, Tarr said revenue will be just over $4 billion for 2022, according to trailing fourth quarter results.

“Third quarter discharge growth was 7.5%, inclusive of 4.1% same-store growth,” Tarr said. “We made continued progress on reducing contract labor through our hiring and retention initiatives, but elevated staffing costs again impacted our profitability. Consequently, we have revised our 2022 guidance. We remain confident in the long-term prospects for our business.”
