BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Sept. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — HealthSouth Corporation’s Chief Medical Officer Dexanne B. Clohan, M.D., was recently honored with the Annual Leadership Excellence Award at the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) meeting held in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Sept. 15 -17. AMRPA is a national trade organization that supports medical rehabilitation.

The award recognizes Dr. Clohan’s impact in the field of medical rehabilitation through transformative leadership initiatives, lifelong service in the field, local and national leadership advocacy, mentoring future leaders, improving patient outcomes, research and education.

“Dexanne’s passion for providing care to our patients is clearly evidenced in each of the many, key initiatives she has successfully directed during her tenure at HealthSouth,” said HealthSouth Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tarr. “She has led our hospitals through almost one million patient discharges with dedication and compassion. We are grateful for her continued service to the HealthSouth team.”

A few of Dr. Clohan’s many initiatives at HealthSouth include the Physician Advisory Board, an internal board comprised of 11 physicians that advocate for patient care and promote a culture of excellence among physicians in HealthSouth hospitals; the Comfort, Professionalism and Respect program (CPR), an internal customer-service training program that helps employees understand their role in patient care and satisfaction; and the WITH notebook (Wellness Information and Tools for Health), a patient and family education resource that is personalized with the patients’ rehabilitation program details and provides helpful state and federal resources.

She has also served in various leadership roles in organizations including the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In addition to her leadership roles with these organizations, she advocates for patients and providers by meeting with congressional leaders to discuss current rehabilitation issues.

Dr. Clohan, a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, joined HealthSouth as chief medical officer in April 2006. Prior to joining HealthSouth, she acted as a medical director for several well-known organizations including Aetna, Inc., Meridian Health Care Management, and Memorial Independent Practice Association.
