DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 31, 2018 – This morning, Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health Corp. and Premier Health broke ground on their new inpatient rehabilitation hospital, to be named The Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio, a joint venture of Encompass Health. The hospital will be located across from the Miami Valley Hospital campus at the intersection of Apple St. and South Main St.

Craig Schneider, system director for spiritual care at Premier Health, delivered the invocation. Presentation remarks were provided by Lynne Blinco, CEO of the future inpatient rehabilitation hospital; Mike Maiberger, president of Miami Valley Hospital and COO of Premier Health; and Mark Tarr, president and CEO of Encompass Health Corp.

The freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital will include 60 private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym, an in-house pharmacy, courtyard, four-chair dialysis suite, three bariatric rooms, an isolation room, dining room and dayroom areas. It is expected to begin serving patients in spring 2020.

“Together, Encompass Health and Premier Health will provide a strong continuum of care for our patients that allows them to reach great outcomes,” said Blinco. “This space may be steel and dirt for now; but in spring 2020, this will be a place where patients will discover hope and restored independence.”

“Today’s groundbreaking begins a new chapter in Miami Valley Hospital’s long history of providing quality inpatient rehabilitation services for patients in the Dayton region,” said Maiberger. “This new facility and the talented care team will provide an environment that will take the delivery of efficient, quality care to a higher level.”

Project partners include the architect Gresham Smith, Doster Construction and Admiral Engineering. The cost of the project is approximately $27 million.

The hospital will provide inpatient rehabilitation services and higher medical management for patients recovering from stroke and other neurological disorders, hip fractures, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and complex orthopedic conditions. Patients will receive a minimum of three hours per day of therapy for five days each week, 24-hour nursing care, access to advanced technologies and frequent visits by an attending physician during their stay.
