A day in the life of a home health aide

We sat down with Kendra Abron, a home health aide at Encompass Health – Home Health & Hospice in Dallas, Texas, to see what’s it like to work in home health and the most rewarding aspect of her career. Here’s what she had to say:

What inspired you to become a home health aide?

I chose to become an aide so that I could fulfill my passion of helping others. Working in home health allows me to not only take care of my patients, but make lasting connections with them as well as their families-which is perfect for a people person like myself.

What does your typical day look like?

The first thing I do when I arrive to a patient’s home is start building our connection by asking them about themselves. I ask them how they’ve been and then gradually transition into how they’ve been feeling and if they’ve had any pain. I then proceed to take their vitals while continuing our conversation so I can make them feel as comfortable as possible.

One of the most important aspects of my job is helping patients complete everyday tasks, such as showering and getting dressed. I help the patient pick out their outfit and then assist them with maneuvering safely in and out of the shower, and assist in other areas as needed. Once the patient is all cleaned up and in their favorite outfit, I escort them to a spot where they’re comfortable to sit and rest. Then I give my hugs and let the patient and family know when I will return!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is making my patients feel better. It’s amazing how something as simple as a shower can improve how they feel. When I arrive to my visits, my patients can sometimes feel down or a little bothered, but after talking with them and helping them complete their tasks, they feel a lot better; that tells me my job was well done.

How does your role as a home health aide provide a better way to care to patients and their families?

In my role as a home health aide, I’m able to teach patients and their families how to complete daily tasks in a safe and effective way, which makes them feel more comfortable and allows them to maintain a level of independence.

Why did you choose Encompass Health?

I chose Encompass Health because our clinicians truly care about our patients, and that’s the kind of company I strive and love to work for.
