Grand opening celebration held for South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital

Inpatient rehabilitation hospital will begin serving patients on May 20

LUBBOCK, Texas, May 16, 2019 – A community grand opening celebration for South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of UMC and Encompass Health, was held on Wednesday, May 15 from 4-6 p.m. The new, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital, is located at 5406 Colgate Street in Lubbock and is expected to begin serving patients on May 20.

Many local leaders and guests attended the event, which included hospital tours, formal ribbon cutting, an invocation delivered by Rev. Larry Cothrin, director of Pastoral Care at UMC, and presentation remarks provided by Chris Wortham, CEO of South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital; Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish; John Lowe, director of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at UMC; and Barb Jacobsmeyer, executive vice president and president of inpatient hospitals of Birmingham, Alabama-based Encompass Health Corp.

“Through individualized, rehabilitative care at South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital, we will help patients relearn skills such as walking, talking and self-care,” said Wortham. “It’s extremely gratifying that our team will help make a difference in the lives of our patients and allow them return to their loved ones, favorite activities, Red Raiders athletics events and the Lubbock community.”

South Plains Rehabilitation Hospital will provide a minimum of three hours of intensive therapy a day, five days a week; 24/7 nursing care; and frequent visits by an attending physician. The floorplan includes 40 private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym, advanced rehabilitation technologies, activities of daily living suite, in-house pharmacy, courtyard, dining room and dayroom areas.

The specialized hospital serves patients recovering from conditions such as stroke and other neurological disorders, brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, complex orthopedic conditions and cardiac conditions.
